The project “War Witness Archive” creates a platform for constructing and actualizing the context of archive photos of the First World War suggesting to look beyond time and place making space for decoding these silent enclosed war witnesses.
Engaging experts and viewers into formulation of a context Aleksei Shinkarenko, the author of the project, moderate a dialog, a discussion, and as a result, series of exhibition documented in the book. During this process not only the concern to the war and dead is resumed, but also it’s possible for viewers to interpret what they see and mythologize the context comparing with experience and knowledge of a modern person. Thus, global historical parallels are created that connect the last hundred years’ events with the present moment and actualize them in modern historical field.
On the base of archives, expert opinion, perception of the project participants the required context mythologization of submitted documents is made, the myth of photography as a document is proved or demolished, the new look on the “unknown war” and a war as a whole is produced.
